Swim, Watch, Care — Aquarium Play Begins

A child peers into a plastic bag filled with water and a plastic fish and watches it float. "My fish is SWIMMING in the bag — it needs CLEAN water and FOOD to stay healthy!" Aquariums are tanks filled with water where fish, plants, and underwater creatures live. Home aquariums can be small bowls or large tanks with filters, heaters, and lights. Public aquariums have massive tanks with sharks, rays, and coral reefs that millions of people visit each year. Fish use gills to breathe underwater and fins to swim. Taking care of an aquarium teaches responsibility, observation, and respect for living things. The National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends living things and observation activities because children develop scientific inquiry, responsibility, empathy, and environmental awareness through aquarium and fish tank play.

This guide covers fish habitat building, water science, keeper role play, underwater art, and aquarium math for ages 2-6.

Aquarium Play by Age

AgeWhat to Try
2Put toy fish in water; say "fish" and "swim"; watch bubbles
3Build a shoebox aquarium with three fish; count the bubbles
4Explain what fish need to live; set up a simple fish habitat
5Design a complete aquarium system with filter, light, and plants
6Research fish species; test water temperature and compare habitats

Fish Habitat & Tank Building Crafts (Ages 2-6)

  • Shoebox Aquarium (Adult help) Paint the inside of a shoebox blue. Add paper seaweed, clay rocks, and plastic fish — a mini aquarium! "My shoebox aquarium has FOUR fish, THREE green seaweed strips, and FIVE clay rocks on the bottom!" Shoebox tank.
  • Plastic Bag Fish Tank (Adult supervision) Fill a zip bag with water and add a plastic fish. Seal it and hold it up to the light! "My bag fish floats at the TOP then sinks to the BOTTOM when I tip it — water moves the FISH!" Bag tank.
  • Sponge Filter Model (Adult help) Place a sponge in a bowl of water. Squeeze it — it traps dirt like a real aquarium filter! "I squeezed the sponge and BROWN water came out — filters keep aquarium water CLEAN!" Sponge filter.
  • Gravel and Plant Setup (Adult help) Pour colored gravel into a clear container. Add plastic plants — a fish habitat base! "I poured THREE colors of gravel — BLUE, white, and GREEN — then added TWO plastic plants!" Gravel setup.
  • Cave and Hiding Spot (Adult help) Stack small rocks or clay pieces to make a cave in your aquarium. Fish need hiding spots! "My clay cave has ONE entrance and enough room for ONE toy fish to hide INSIDE!" Fish cave.

Water Quality & Fish Science (Ages 3-6)

  • Sink or Float Fish (Adult supervision) Drop different objects in water — a plastic fish, a rock, a leaf, a coin. Which sink? Which float? "The plastic fish FLOATS, the rock SINKS, the leaf floats, the coin SINKS — two float and two SINK!" Sink float.
  • Bubble Observation (Adult help) Blow bubbles through a straw into water. Watch them rise — fish bubbles work the same way! "I blew TWENTY bubbles in ten seconds — they rose to the TOP and POPPED — fish make fewer, SMALLER bubbles!" Bubble watch.
  • Warm vs. Cold Water Fish (Adult help) Fish from tropical waters need warm water. Fish from cold rivers need cool water. Test water temperature! "Tropical fish like SEVENTY-EIGHT degree water — cold water fish like SIXTY-FIVE degree water!" Temperature needs.
  • Clean vs. Dirty Water (Adult help) Add a drop of food coloring to clear water. It spreads — this is how pollution affects fish! "One drop of RED food coloring spread through ALL the water — fish need CLEAN water to stay HEALTHY!" Water pollution.
  • Fish Breathing Demo (Adult help) Fish breathe oxygen from water through gills. Show how a sieve lets water through but catches solids — gills work similarly! "The sieve lets WATER through but catches the beads — gills let WATER pass but keep the OXYGEN!" Gills demo.

Aquarium Keeper Role Play (Ages 3-6)

  • Feeding Time (Adult help) Sprinkle a tiny pinch of fish food (or use rice grains) into your pretend aquarium. Count how many grains! "I sprinkled EIGHT grains of rice into the tank — fish get only a PINCH, not too much!" Feeding.
  • Water Change Day (Adult supervision) Scoop out half the water from a bowl and add fresh water. Aquarium keepers do this weekly! "I scooped out FOUR cups of old water and added FOUR cups of fresh — the water looks CLEARER now!" Water change.
  • Fish Health Check (Adult help) Pretend to check each fish — are the fins moving? Are the eyes clear? Is it swimming normally? "I checked THREE fish — ALL had moving fins, clear eyes, and normal swimming — they are HEALTHY!" Health check.
  • Tank Cleaning (Adult help) Use a small brush to scrub the inside of a glass jar — like cleaning algae off an aquarium wall! "I scrubbed for TWO minutes and the glass went from GREEN to CLEAR — algae grows when there is too much LIGHT!" Tank cleaning.
  • Aquarium Log Book (Adult help) Draw or write what you observe each day — how many fish, water color, fish behavior! "Day ONE: fish swimming a lot — Day TWO: fish hiding in cave — Day THREE: fish eating ALL the food!" Keeper log.

Fish & Underwater Art (Ages 3-6)

  • Fish Drawing Draw a fish — an oval body, a triangle tail, fins on top and bottom, an eye, and a smiling mouth! "My fish has a BLUE body, an ORANGE tail, TWO fins, ONE eye, and a happy MOUTH!" Fish draw.
  • Bubble Wrap Fish (Adult help) Paint bubble wrap and press it onto fish-shaped paper — scaly texture! "The bubble wrap made FORTY round scales on my fish — they feel BUMPY when I touch them!" Scale art.
  • Underwater Scene Draw an underwater world — fish, seaweed, bubbles, rocks, and maybe a treasure chest! "My underwater scene has FIVE fish, FOUR seaweed plants, TWELVE bubbles, and ONE treasure chest!" Underwater art.
  • Paper Plate Fish (Adult help) Cut a wedge from a paper plate and reattach it as a tail. Paint the plate — a paper plate fish! "My plate fish is YELLOW with BLUE dots — the wedge tail makes it look like it is SWIMMING!" Plate fish.
  • Aquarium Diorama (Adult help) Build an aquarium inside a shoebox — blue walls, sand floor, paper fish on strings, tissue paper seaweed! "My aquarium diorama has SIX hanging fish, FOUR tissue seaweeds, and EIGHT paper bubbles!" Diorama.

Aquarium Counting & Measurement (Ages 3-6)

  • Fish Count Count the fish in your aquarium. How many total? How many of each color? "I have SEVEN fish — THREE orange, TWO blue, ONE yellow, and ONE red — that is FOUR colors!" Fish count.
  • Tank Size Measure (Adult help) Measure your aquarium or container with a ruler. How long, wide, and tall? "My container is EIGHT inches long, FOUR inches wide, and FIVE inches tall — that is a good home for SMALL fish!" Tank measure.
  • Bubble Count (Adult help) Blow bubbles into water and count how many reach the surface before popping! "I counted FIFTEEN bubbles rise to the top before they popped — BIG bubbles lasted LONGER!" Bubble count.
  • Water Volume (Adult help) Use a measuring cup to fill your container. How many cups does it hold? "My container holds SIX cups of water — that is FORTY-EIGHT ounces — fish need ENOUGH water to swim!" Volume measure.
  • Aquarium Number Story "An aquarium had eight fish. Three were orange and the rest were blue. How many blue fish?" "Eight minus THREE equals FIVE blue fish — MORE than half the tank is BLUE!" Number story.
