The Real Goal: Scientific Thinking Skills

Before the domains, the skills. When researchers and early-childhood educators talk about "doing science" with three-, four-, and five-year-olds, they are almost never talking about content. They are talking about a small set of science process skills — ways of using the mind and the senses — that children practice over and over until they become automatic. The National Science Teaching Association and every major preschool science framework treat these skills as the foundation that later content is built on, because a child who can observe and question can eventually learn any science; a child who only memorizes facts cannot.

Heartbeat investigation. Have children sit quietly and feel their pulse or place a hand on their chest. Then run in place for thirty seconds and feel again. "What changed? Why?" At what age should I start science activities?

From toddlerhood. A two-year-old dropping objects into a bucket is doing physics. Do I need to know the science to teach it?

How long should a science activity last?

What if my child isn't interested in science?
